Performance / hourly rate
How do you calculate poker hourly rate?
Poker hourly rate is net profit or loss divided by time played. For several sessions, divide total profit by total hours; do not average the individual hourly rates.

The formula
Hourly rate = total net profit ÷ total hours played
Calculate your hourly rateWhy the combined rate matters
| Session | Net result | Hours | Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | +100 | 2 | +50/hour |
| B | −40 | 4 | −10/hour |
| Combined | +60 | 6 | +10/hour |
A simple average of +50 and −10 is +20/hour, which is wrong for the combined sample. The longer losing session must receive its full weight: 60 ÷ 6 = 10/hour.
Keep the inputs consistent
- Record all buy-ins, rebuys and cash-outs in the same currency.
- Choose whether your net result includes tips and travel costs, and apply that definition consistently. Do not subtract rake twice if it is already reflected in your cash-out.
- Record actual playing time. Keep the same policy for breaks across sessions.
- Add profit and hours separately before dividing.
What the number does not tell you
A positive observed rate is not proof of a sustainable edge. Results vary with the games, stakes and opponents in the sample, and a few large pots can dominate a short record. This arithmetic does not estimate confidence intervals or predict earnings.
The free PokerArc Session Tracker records buy-ins, cash-outs and duration, then calculates total profit and a weighted hourly rate. The standalone calculator above remains useful for a quick calculation without saving a record.
